Main Article Content
Abstract
This research focuses on the social and family factors that contribute to low levels of education among adults living in the municipality of San Juan del Cesar in La Guajira. It also takes into account the cultural, economic, and demographic contexts that also have an impact on this social phenomenon. The scope of this research was descriptive and was carried out as non-experimental fieldwork.
The sample consisted of 1,473 people with low educational attainment, representing different neighborhoods in the municipality of San Juan del Cesar, La Guajira. Structured observation was used as the technique for collecting information, applying a field diary as an instrument and a face-to-face census survey technique consisting of a questionnaire with closed questions.
The results show that the low educational level among adults in the municipality under study is strongly related to gender, economic, and family factors. Lack of resources, domestic responsibilities, and the prioritization of basic needs over education are recurring elements.
In addition, informal working conditions and the lack of sustainable literacy programs exacerbate the problem, limiting the personal and collective development of this population.
